City Knit
Alternate mobility for Mumbai | UNI Hyperlocal Competition | 2019
We re-examined the needs of the city from a 'people-first' approach. Does a new form of mobility itself need to solve the congestion issues of the city or can re-zoning the city begin to de-congest the mobility lines? We noticed that the current railway lines bear an area of over 150 Ha - which can be repurposed for bring work and home closer to the people, instead of taking people long distances to reach work / home. Keeping this idea in mind, we re-design the western, central and harbour railways into 'green', 'blue' and 'service' lines - attempting to benefit the city in various different ways.

In situ production, shared streets, green corridors, integrated fitness, and greater 'east-west' connections are some of the design strategies thus suggested. The green line would be the major connection line encouraging public transport and rapid transport systems. The blue line, which connects most of the water bodies, would be repurposed as a water reservoir in the city. The service line would re-look at farming and production within the city limits hence limiting dependencies and supply chains. Furthermore, the possibly obsolete railway compartments were envisioned to be reused as working or retailing or living shelters.
