Sustenance of Living
A sustainable living rooted in vernacular architecture and planning. | 2016
To sustain is to endure, maintain what one has. Most commonly, sustainability is linked to the environmentally conscious design but it doesn't end there. To sustain, every place needs an insight into its contextual, economic and social factors.
The proposal, is an attempt to address the Indian scenario by translating basic issues of affordability, fading of traditional architecture, into a prototype of rural housing, in order to meet the need and aspiration of the people. Sustainability, holding the prime criteria meets the aspects of economic, social, cultural and environmental factors.
The masterplan derives its understanding through research of vernacular housing typologies across India, alternative building materials and geographic conditions, to create a new typology to suit the current needs and yet enrich the community life.
The design ranges from a larger incremental masterplan with markets and gathering spaces to varying clusters typologies combining working and living units, enabling small nuances of daily life to take place To the smallest part of the system, of wall and roof types adapted to fit the climatic context.
